Trail food for the backcountry
Getting the right trail weight and nutrition will be an ongoing experiment over the next couple of months. This is the menu for the next and longest stretch of trail from Pelorus Bridge to St Arnaud (See map section or https://www.teararoa.org.nz.) This stretch includes tough terrain and four high mountain passes. It is critical to pack extra days of food on this stretch in case of inclement weather. I packed 13 days worth of food with the hopes of completing this section in 10 days. Completing this section in 8 days moving fast with great weather or up to 13 days if I have to wait out a few storms. I am bringing 3 gas canisters as well which should be more than enough. The goal is quick cooking (under 5 minutes), lightweight food that is high in calories, protein, and nutrition. The experiment will continue each trail section and I'm sure after about a month I will have my favorite recipes and combinations to share.
