The final Walk. Two Thumbs Track
This was my final section and it also hit the highest point on the Te Araroa trail so it seemed a fitting end to my journey. This section of the trail required long walking days with a pretty brutal sun and no shade cover. The best part of this track was the historic hut system. I stayed in an old hut from the 1800s, shown in the picture below! The trail involved a lot of river crossings, and tussock and ridgeline walking with views of the Mt. Cook range. It made for a perfect ending. I’m so glad I did this! In fine fashion, on my last day I got epically lost, broke my trekking pole, fell through multiple sticker bushes and had to follow a river through a gorge for a couple of hours before finding the trail again. It was still worth it and it was a memorable way to end this journey.
